Contemporary Country Garden
Location: Nr Winchester, Hampshire
Brief: To try and marry the modernity of the architect-designed house with both the garden and the country views beyond.
The resulting design starts with a more formal garden immediately adjacent to the house, where a new flight of steps leads down onto a grass terrace that incorporates a long, narrow rill to draw the eye out towards the distant views. The Blanc de Bierges paving used for both the steps and the rill edging adds a contemporary touch, and also gives a sense of unity to this area. From there, formal pleached limes and box then give way to more informal borders of contemporary grass/perennial planting, something the client, as a keen gardener, particularly requested the inclusion of. This planting creates an ideal transition from the formal planting adjacent to the house to the natural planting beyond the garden boundary, and includes Asters, Achilleas, Verbascums and Sedums in combination with grass species such as Stipa, Hakonechloa, Festuca and Miscanthus.
