A Garden of Curves

Location: Hampshire

Brief: To transform a large, empty plot into an informal, colourful country garden.

This sizeable plot at the rear of a new build house was a complete blank canvas, the only existing feature being the lovely mature oak at the far end of the garden.

Apart from plenty of colour, the client wanted to incorporate a variety of areas to sit at different times of the day, together with space for a summerhouse, a shed/working area and a large koi pond, and the resulting scheme brings all of this together by way of an informal layout of curves and circles.

A series of climber-covered, bespoke-made oak arches and a selection of semi-mature ornamental trees bring height to the scheme, and the generous, sandstone-paved areas immediately adjacent to the house are linked to the rest of the garden via curved paths paved with granite setts. The well-sized borders are stocked with plants such as Rudbeckias, Japanese Anemones, Hellebores and Magnolias to ensure that there is flower colour in the garden all year round, whilst plants such as Acers, Bamboos, topiary Box and evergreen ferns provide foliage interest and structure.
