A Large Town Garden

Location: Winchester

Brief: To unite the house and existing garden, and create more space for entertaining

With an unusually large plot for a city centre property, the addition of an orangery to this Georgian town house prompted a rethink of the existing garden layout in order to enable the whole building to sit happily within the site.
Whilst the client wanted something that would be sympathetic to the period of the house, they wanted it with a contemporary twist.

The design solution was to create a stone-paved, upper terrace to link the orangery and house to the garden beyond via a broad flight of steps, whilst a lower, more informal terrace of gravel and paving provides additional space for entertaining and relaxation.
The colour palette immediately around the terraces has been restricted mostly to pinks, whites, silvers and blues – Rose ‘Bonica’, lavenders and big, bold Allium christophii are highlights in midsummer, but throughout the whole garden, planting for year round colour and interest was key.
