Large Country Garden
Location: Stockbridge, Hampshire
Brief: To create a more obvious entrance up to the front door, and landscape the garden in order to set the house off to better effect.
This old house sits perched on top of a hillside, but had nothing to define the main route to the front door. The solution was to incorporate new paving and steps within and around the existing terrace, flanked by borders of lavender and Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’. The rest of the site was almost entirely down to grass and lacking much in the way of plant interest or ground-shaping, which the owner, as a keen gardener, was keen to rectify. This was achieved by the incorporation of generous, informal borders with a varied selection of perennials, grasses and shrubs, for all year round interest, together with a number of trees for height and structure. The stems of the Himalayan birches are chalk white, and great for providing winter interest, whilst the bold groups of ornamental grasses such as Stipa gigantea, Miscanthus and Panicum provide movement and texture.
TESTIMONIAL from the client: “Belinda did an outstanding job with the extensive landscaping plans for my property. Eighteen months down the track, the garden is truly stunning. Belinda has all the qualities of a great designer. I was so impressed at how she took on board my rather detailed “brief” with regard to colour and style, likes and dislikes and offered some fantastic suggestions to ensure that the work when done, both complimented and enhanced the garden areas as well as fitting in perfectly to the surrounding rural landscape. I am so impressed and pleased with the results and can’t thank her enough for the attention to detail and care she took when undertaking this project, nothing was ever too much trouble and I know that with time my garden will just keep getting better thanks to Belinda’s fantastic planning skills”.
